In Short: What the DP-600 Exam Tests, and How to Pass It

The DP-600 exam - Implementing Analytics Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric - earns the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate certification. It is still current as of September 2026, and Microsoft updates the English version on 19 October 2026 with a minor change to the query objectives and no change to the weightings. This DP-600 study guide covers who the exam suits, the three skill areas and their weightings, what to study in each, a six-week plan, and exam-day tips.

The short version: nearly half the marks come from preparing data, and the rest split evenly between semantic models and keeping a solution secure and deployable. People who pass have built things in Fabric, not just read about them.

    Who DP-600 Is For

Microsoft's audience profile describes someone who designs, creates and manages analytical assets such as semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses. The responsibilities are preparing and enriching data for analysis, securing and maintaining analytics assets, and implementing and managing semantic models. You are also expected to query data with SQL, KQL and DAX - all three, not just the one you use daily.

In practice this suits experienced Power BI developers moving into Fabric, analytics engineers who sit between data engineering and reporting, and BI leads who need to design the layer that report builders consume. If you have never written a SQL view or a KQL query, plan extra time for both.

The logistics, per Microsoft Learn: 100 minutes to complete the exam, proctored (online or at a test centre through Pearson VUE), with possible interactive components. You need 700 or greater to pass. The price is set by the country where the exam is proctored and shows when you schedule. The certification expires after 12 months and renews through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

The DP-600 Skills Measured and Weightings

The official study guide lists three skill areas:

    • Maintain a data analytics solution (25-30%): workspace, item, row, column, object and file-level access; sensitivity labels; endorsement; Git version control; Power BI Desktop projects (.pbip); deployment pipelines; impact analysis; XMLA endpoint deployment; reusable assets such as .pbit and .pbids files and shared semantic models
    • Prepare data (45-50%): connecting to and discovering data (OneLake catalog, Real-Time hub), choosing between data stores, OneLake integration for Eventhouse and semantic models, transforming data (views, functions, stored procedures, star schemas, denormalising, deduplicating, handling nulls), and querying with the Visual query editor, SQL, KQL and DAX
    • Implement and manage semantic models (25-30%): storage modes, star schemas, bridge tables and many-to-many relationships, DAX variables, iterators, windowing and information functions, calculation groups, dynamic format strings, field parameters, large model storage format, composite models, DAX and visual performance, Direct Lake configuration and incremental refresh

Microsoft notes that most questions cover generally available features, but commonly used preview features can appear. Read the study guide itself before you book - the bullets are the syllabus.

What to Study in Each Area

    Prepare data (45-50%)

This is where the exam is won or lost. Know which Fabric item suits which job: our guide to choosing between a lakehouse and a warehouse in Fabric covers the trade-offs the "choose between different data stores" objective probes. Expect questions on moving and transforming data - the answer to "which Fabric experience is used to move and transform data?" is Data Factory, which Microsoft describes as helping you "move and transform your data at scale" through pipelines, copy jobs and Dataflow Gen2. Our explainer on how Data Factory pipelines and Dataflow Gen2 work is a useful primer.

Practise the same filter-and-aggregate task in the Visual query editor, T-SQL, KQL and DAX until switching languages feels routine. And be able to implement a star schema in practice, because the objective appears in both the data preparation and semantic model areas.

Implement and manage semantic models (25-30%)

Storage modes are heavily tested. A semantic model built on a Fabric lakehouse uses Direct Lake, and you should know its two variants: Direct Lake on SQL can fall back to DirectQuery (for example over a SQL view, or when the warehouse uses SQL-based granular access control), while Direct Lake on OneLake does not fall back. Our comparison of Direct Lake vs Import vs DirectQuery covers when each fits. Note too that a report connecting to an already-published semantic model uses a live connection - read each question for which layer it is asking about.

For DAX, go beyond basic measures: variables, iterators, CALCULATE with table filters, window functions and calculation groups. If DAX is not yet second nature, start with what DAX is and how evaluation context works.

Maintain a data analytics solution (25-30%)

Understand the layers of access - workspace roles, item permissions, then data-level controls - and when each applies. Our complete guide to Power BI row-level security covers the RLS objective. For the lifecycle half, build a small project end to end: connect a workspace to Git, save a .pbip, and promote it through Fabric deployment pipelines from dev to test to prod.

    A Six-Week DP-600 Study Plan

This assumes five to eight hours a week and access to a Fabric workspace (a trial capacity works). Compress it to four weeks if you already work in Fabric daily.

    • Week 1: read the study guide, take Microsoft's free practice assessment cold to find your gaps, and start the self-paced learning paths from course DP-600T00 on Microsoft Learn (explore analytics data stores; design and transform analytics data)
    • Week 2: data preparation hands-on - load data into a lakehouse and a warehouse, build views and a stored procedure, clean duplicates and nulls, build a star schema
    • Week 3: querying - the same questions in SQL, KQL (use an Eventhouse) and DAX query view
    • Week 4: semantic models - Direct Lake and Import models, relationships including many-to-many, calculation groups, field parameters, incremental refresh
    • Week 5: security and lifecycle - RLS and object-level security, sensitivity labels, Git integration, deployment pipelines, the XMLA endpoint
    • Week 6: retake the practice assessment, revisit weak objectives, try the exam sandbox, and book the exam when you score consistently well

    Exam-Day Tips

    • Try the exam sandbox first so the question types and interface hold no surprises
    • Read for the constraint: many questions hinge on one phrase, such as "minimise capacity use" or "without copying data"
    • Budget your time across the 100 minutes and flag long questions rather than stalling on them
    • Check the current exam rules on Microsoft's exam duration and experience page before the day, including what resources and interactive components to expect
    • If you do not pass, use the score report to target weak areas - Microsoft allows a retake 24 hours after a first attempt, with longer waits for later retakes
    • Book with a personal Microsoft account: Microsoft warns that exam records tied to a work account can be lost if you leave the organisation

    DP-600 vs DP-700

DP-700 leads to the Fabric Data Engineer Associate certification and splits evenly across implementing and managing an analytics solution, ingesting and transforming data, and monitoring and optimising (30-35% each). It leans towards pipelines, Spark, streaming and operations; DP-600 leans towards semantic models, DAX and serving data to report builders. There is overlap in data preparation and security, so passing one gives you a head start on the other. Our DP-700 exam study guide covers that exam in the same format.

    Where Solv Systems Comes In

Certification is most valuable when it maps to work your team actually does. Our Power BI and Fabric training helps analytics teams build hands-on skills in semantic modelling, DAX, Direct Lake and deployment - the ground DP-600 covers - and prepare for the exam alongside real projects.

    Frequently asked

DP-600, Implementing Analytics Solutions Using Microsoft Fabric, is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate certification. It tests preparing data, building and optimising semantic models, and securing and maintaining analytics solutions in Fabric, using SQL, KQL and DAX.

Maintain a data analytics solution (25-30%), Prepare data (45-50%), and Implement and manage semantic models (25-30%). Microsoft updates the English exam on 19 October 2026; the weightings stay the same and the change log marks only a minor change to the query and analyse data objectives.

A score of 700 or greater is required to pass. Microsoft's exam page gives 100 minutes to complete it, and the exam is proctored and may include interactive components. The price depends on the country where it is proctored, so check the exam page when scheduling.

Four to six weeks of steady study works for most people who already build Power BI semantic models. People new to SQL, KQL or Fabric items such as lakehouses and warehouses should allow the longer end, with most of the time spent hands-on in a Fabric workspace rather than reading.

Yes. Microsoft associate certifications expire after 12 months, and you renew by passing a free, online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn rather than resitting the full exam.

Take DP-600 if your work centres on semantic models, DAX and serving data to report builders. Take DP-700, the Fabric Data Engineer Associate exam, if your work centres on ingestion, transformation pipelines, orchestration and monitoring. Many Fabric practitioners eventually hold both.
