In Short: What DP-800 Is and Whether It Is Worth Taking

DP-800, Developing AI-Enabled Database Solutions, is the exam behind the Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate certification. Microsoft announced it in beta on 12 March 2026 and said general availability would follow in May 2026. The current certification page no longer carries a beta label, and Microsoft refreshed the skills outline from 19 October 2026 with minor changes. It covers SQL Server, Azure SQL and SQL databases in Microsoft Fabric.

The short version: this is a SQL developer exam with an AI layer, not an AI exam with some SQL. Around three quarters of the marks are database design, T-SQL, security, performance and CI/CD. The rest is embeddings, vector search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) inside the database.

    Who DP-800 Is For

Microsoft's audience profile describes someone with "subject matter expertise in designing and developing AI-enabled database solutions across Microsoft SQL platforms". You are expected to write T-SQL, develop databases, work with CI/CD in GitHub and know AI-assisted development tools. You should also understand AI concepts such as embeddings, vectors and models.

In practice it suits database developers who own a schema and its deployment pipeline, DBAs moving towards development, and application developers who work closely with SQL. Power BI developers are better served by DP-600, and Fabric pipeline engineers by DP-700.

    The Exam Basics

From the certification page and study guide on Microsoft Learn:

    • Passing score: 700 or greater
    • Duration: 120 minutes, proctored, possibly with interactive components
    • Level: intermediate, listed under the Developer role
    • Languages: English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Korean, German, French, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish
    • Price: set by the country or region where the exam is proctored, so check when you schedule through Pearson VUE
    • Retakes: 24 hours after a first failure, longer for later attempts
    • Renewal: associate certifications expire annually and renew through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn

    The DP-800 Skills Measured

The study guide lists three skill areas, with skills measured as of 19 October 2026.

Design and develop database solutions (35-40%)

This is core database development. It covers tables, data types, columnstore indexes and specialised tables (in-memory, temporal, external, ledger and graph), plus JSON columns and indexes, constraints, sequences and partitioning. It also covers views, functions, stored procedures and triggers.

Read the advanced T-SQL list closely. It names JSON functions such as JSON_ARRAYAGG and JSON_CONTAINS, regular expressions such as REGEXP_LIKE, fuzzy matching with EDIT_DISTANCE and JARO_WINKLER_DISTANCE, and graph queries with MATCH. Many experienced SQL developers have not used these yet.

This area also includes AI-assisted development. That means enabling GitHub Copilot and Copilot in Fabric, configuring model and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tool options in a chat session, writing GitHub Copilot instruction files, and connecting to MCP server endpoints for SQL Server and a Fabric lakehouse. You also need to interpret the security impact of using these tools.

Secure, optimize, and deploy database solutions (35-40%)

Security covers Always Encrypted and column-level encryption, Dynamic Data Masking, row-level security, object-level permissions, passwordless access and auditing. It also covers securing model endpoints with managed identity and securing GraphQL, REST and MCP endpoints.

Performance covers isolation levels and concurrency, execution plans, DMVs, Query Store, Query Performance Insight, blocking and deadlocks.

Deployment is a big section. It covers SQL Database Projects (including SDK-style projects), unit and integration testing, source control, branching and pull requests, secrets management, schema drift detection and pipeline controls. Integration covers Data API builder configuration for REST and GraphQL, Azure Monitor, and change handling with change event streaming, CDC, Change Tracking, Azure Functions SQL trigger bindings or Logic Apps. If GraphQL is new to you, our guide to the Fabric API for GraphQL explains the concepts.

Implement AI capabilities in database solutions (25-30%)

This is the part that makes DP-800 different. It has three groups:

    • Models and embeddings: evaluating and creating external models, choosing how to keep embeddings up to date (triggers, Change Tracking, CDC, Azure Functions, Logic Apps or Microsoft Foundry), choosing which columns to embed, chunking and generating embeddings
    • Intelligent search: choosing between full-text, semantic vector and hybrid search; the vector data type and vector indexes; VECTOR_DISTANCE, VECTOR_NORMALIZE, VECTORPROPERTY and VECTOR_SEARCH; approximate (ANN) versus exact (KNN) search; hybrid search and reciprocal rank fusion (RRF)
    • RAG: identifying use cases, calling a language model with sp_invoke_external_rest_endpoint, converting structured data to JSON for the model and extracting the response

Microsoft notes that most questions cover generally available features, but commonly used preview features can appear. That matters here, because availability differs by platform.

What the AI Features Look Like in Practice

The study guide does not name an index algorithm, but the product documentation does. CREATE VECTOR INDEX builds an approximate index on a vector column. DiskANN is the only supported type, and the metrics are cosine, euclidean and dot product. A vector index needs at least 100 rows with non-NULL vectors before it can be created.

Status is the detail that catches people out. Microsoft Learn lists vector indexes and VECTOR_SEARCH as generally available in Azure SQL Database, SQL database in Fabric and Azure SQL Managed Instance on the Always-up-to-date update policy. In SQL Server 2025 they are still in preview and need the PREVIEW_FEATURES database scoped configuration. At FabCon Europe 2026, Microsoft also announced general availability of DiskANN vector indexes for Azure SQL Database Hyperscale.

Embeddings follow a consistent pattern. You register an embedding endpoint with CREATE EXTERNAL MODEL, split long text with AI_GENERATE_CHUNKS and call AI_GENERATE_EMBEDDINGS to fill a vector column. sp_invoke_external_rest_endpoint is enabled by default in Azure SQL Database and SQL database in Fabric, and disabled by default in SQL Server 2025 and Managed Instance. Microsoft's own documentation warns that it can transfer data to an external entity, which ties straight back to the security objectives.

None of this replaces good data: duplicated or stale source text gives poor search results. See our post on why data quality matters for AI.

    DP-800 vs DP-600 vs DP-700

The three exams overlap less than the names suggest:

    • DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate): semantic models, DAX, preparing data in lakehouses and warehouses, querying with SQL, KQL and DAX. Prepare data is 45-50% of the exam. 100 minutes. See our DP-600 exam study guide.
    • DP-700 (Fabric Data Engineer Associate): ingestion, transformation, orchestration, streaming and monitoring with SQL, PySpark and KQL, split evenly across three areas at 30-35% each. 100 minutes. See our DP-700 exam study guide.
    • DP-800 (SQL AI Developer Associate): the relational engine itself across SQL Server, Azure SQL and SQL database in Fabric, plus T-SQL, security, CI/CD, APIs and in-database AI. 120 minutes.

The common ground is SQL and security. DP-800 goes much deeper into T-SQL and database engineering than either Fabric exam, and it is the only one of the three that measures vector search and RAG. If you hold DP-600 or DP-700 and write a lot of T-SQL against a Fabric warehouse or SQL database, DP-800 is a natural next step. If you have never built a stored procedure or a database project, start elsewhere.

    A Six-Week DP-800 Study Plan

This assumes five to eight hours a week. You will need an Azure SQL Database or a SQL database in Fabric (so you can use generally available vector features), an embedding model endpoint and a GitHub repository.

    • Week 1: read the study guide line by line and mark every function or feature you have not used. Try the exam sandbox. Start the self-paced Microsoft Learn plan, Become a SQL AI Developer: Prepare for Certification Exam DP-800.
    • Week 2: design and programmability. Build a small schema with temporal and JSON columns, constraints, partitioning, a view, functions, a stored procedure and a trigger. Practise the JSON, regex and fuzzy matching functions.
    • Week 3: security and performance. Add RLS, Dynamic Data Masking and Always Encrypted. Read execution plans, use Query Store and reproduce a blocking problem on purpose.
    • Week 4: CI/CD and APIs. Put the database in an SDK-style SQL Database Project in GitHub, add tests and a pipeline, detect drift. Expose tables and a procedure through Data API builder over REST and GraphQL.
    • Week 5: AI. Create an external model, chunk and embed some text, create a DiskANN vector index, then compare exact and approximate search. Build hybrid search with full-text and RRF, then a simple RAG call through sp_invoke_external_rest_endpoint.
    • Week 6: set up GitHub Copilot instruction files and an MCP connection, revisit weak areas, and book the exam when practice questions feel routine.

If you prefer a classroom, the instructor-led course is DP-800T00, Develop AI-enabled database solutions, listed at three days.

    Is DP-800 Worth It?

For the right person, yes, for three reasons.

    • It reflects where projects are going. More of our work involves search and grounded answers over data that already lives in SQL, without a separate vector store.
    • It tests real engineering. Deployment, security and performance carry as much weight as database design. A team that passes it should ship better databases, with or without AI.
    • It is broad across platforms. The same skills apply to SQL Server, Azure SQL and Fabric, which suits organisations with a mixed estate.

It is a weaker choice if you rarely write T-SQL. It is also new, and Microsoft has not published pass rates. Take it because the skills map to work you do or want to do, not for the badge alone.

    Frequently asked

DP-800, Developing AI-Enabled Database Solutions, is the exam for the Microsoft Certified: SQL AI Developer Associate certification. It tests database design and T-SQL, security, performance and CI/CD, and AI capabilities such as embeddings, vector and hybrid search and RAG across SQL Server, Azure SQL and SQL database in Microsoft Fabric.

Design and develop database solutions (35-40%), Secure, optimize, and deploy database solutions (35-40%), and Implement AI capabilities in database solutions (25-30%). The current outline applies from 19 October 2026, and Microsoft's change log marks the changes as minor.

Microsoft announced the exam in beta on 12 March 2026 and said general availability would follow in May 2026. The current certification page and study guide no longer label it as beta. Check the exam page when you book for its current status.

Microsoft gives 120 minutes, and the exam is proctored with possible interactive components. You need a score of 700 or greater to pass. The price depends on the country or region where it is proctored, and you can retake it 24 hours after a first failure.

Yes. The skills outline covers the vector data type, vector indexes, VECTOR_DISTANCE, VECTOR_SEARCH, ANN versus KNN search, hybrid search and reciprocal rank fusion. DiskANN is currently the only vector index type. It is generally available in Azure SQL Database and SQL database in Fabric, and in preview in SQL Server 2025.

Take DP-800 if you build databases and applications with T-SQL and want to add AI features in the database. Take DP-600 if you build semantic models and serve data to Power BI. Take DP-700 if you build ingestion, transformation and orchestration in Fabric. SQL and security overlap across all three.

It is worth it if you write T-SQL regularly and expect to build search or RAG over SQL data, because most of the exam tests practical database engineering. It is less useful if you rarely write T-SQL. The certification is new, so Microsoft has not published pass rates.
